About us
The aim of the research group is to use invertebrate model systems and advanced informatics for the identification and analysis of regulatory cascades that determine normal development and metabolism of Metazoan organisms and play critical roles in human diseases. The projects focus on regulatory mechanisms involving nuclear receptors and proteins that transmit and/or modulate their function.
Model systems used for this research include nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans and other Rhabditidae), flatworms (Schmidtea mediterranea) and Diploblastic species (cubomedusan jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora, Aurelia aurita, corals, sea anemones, Porifera and Placozoa). Parallel to model organisms, the research is conducted on mammalian cell cultures and on human samples.
Research Objectives:
- The identification of conserved regulatory mechanisms including nuclear receptors and proteins that transmit or modulate their function.
- The analysis of the parallel (orthologous) mechanisms in mammalian cells and human tissues, including cancers.
Projects:
- Regulation of metabolism and development at the base of Deuterostome evolution.
- Regulatory networks of nuclear receptors in nematodes.
- Nuclear receptors in human cancers.
- Interactors of regulatory pathways involving nuclear receptors – regulatory RNAs, endocrine disruptors and functionally shared proteins.
