Ing. Jiří Hašek, CSc.

Director, Institute of Microbiology CAS

Since his studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, through PhD studies and postdoctoral fellowships in the USA, Belgium and Austria, Jiří Hašek has been focused on the use of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast as a model system for studying the eukaryotic cell.

He introduced immunofluorescence microscopy into the yeast research, which allows to visualize the distribution of specific proteins inside the cell. He has used this technique for yeast cell cycle analyses, the elucidation of yeast cell structure, or the identification of the components of the yeast cytoskeleton.

With the staff of the Laboratory of Cell Reproduction of the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS, he is now interested in stress-induced formation of the stress granules, their dynamics and function. Current projects of the laboratory routinely use modern molecular and cell biology techniques, including imaging of intrachromosomally labelled proteins with fluorescent peptides in living wild-type cells or specific mutants.
