Professor Jiří Neužil received the Award of the Governor of the Central Bohemia Region

Professor Jiří Neužil from the Institute of Biotechnology CAS in the BIOCEV centre received the Central Bohemia Region Governor's Award in the Science and Research category.

Prof. Neužil was nominated for the development of a drug against cancer. 13 years ago, he came up with the idea of a drug that would target the mitochondria of cancer cells directly. The results of the first phase of the clinical trial show that patients tolerate the treatment well. It has had a very positive effect in patients with kidney cancer.

The Governor's Awards were presented on 24 March 2022 at the Central Bohemian Region Gallery in Kutná Hora. These are awards for personalities who are associated with the Central Bohemian Region and whose activity, deed or work is something extraordinary. Personalities are nominated by the public and the winners in each category, with the exception of the Public Award, are decided by a jury composed of representatives of the region and experts. Due to the COVID-19 disease, Petr Solil, spokesman of the BIOCEV Centre, took over the award for Prof. Neužil.

36 personalities were nominated for the Central Bohemian Region Governor's Award. Among them are entrepreneurs, scientists, sportsmen, personalities connected with culture or people who help others.

"It is really very difficult to choose among so many nominations, because each story is different and immeasurable. That's why, with exaggeration, of course, I proposed to award all of them. I am convinced that we need role models, that we need inspiring personalities because they make society stronger. Thank you all very much and I also encourage people to think about nominations for the next year," said Governor Petra Pecková (STAN).

The winners in the individual categories were decided by a committee composed of members of the Central Bohemian Regional Council, representatives of representative clubs and experts from individual areas. The winner of the Public Award category was decided by public voting on the Central Bohemian Region website.
