About us

The operation of the cryobank for long-term storage of samples in liquid nitrogen started in March 2016 and the cryobank is divided into two parts. The first part is situated in the main building of the BIOCEV Centre and is mainly intended for storage of cell lines and hybridomas. The second part is located in building SO-002 as a component of the transgenic and archiving module. This part of the cryobank mainly serves for preservation of mouse sperm and mouse embryos in liquid nitrogen or its vapours.

The storage containers (LABS40K, LABS80K – Taylor-Wharton and 24K) are connected to an external reservoir for liquid nitrogen with a capacity of 10,000 litres and are refilled automatically. The cryobank also includes four filling sites providing the possibility to draw liquid nitrogen into both pressure and non-pressure containers. The entire cryobank system is connected to a back-up power supply for the cases of power outage. All operations, diagnostics and checking of the liquid nitrogen level in the storage containers are fully automated and controlled. The parameters (temperature, humidity, O2 concentration) and the safety in both the cryobank and the storage containers themselves are controlled by a monitoring system connected to GSM and a web interface.

The cryobank core facility also administers production of dry ice.

The cryobank core facility provides:

  • Control and administration of the entire cryobank system
  • Regular checks, maintenance, and supplies of liquid nitrogen
  • Training of employees handling liquid nitrogen
  • Access to the cryobank via chips and allocation of authorizations for handling DW canisters or manipulations with liquid nitrogen at the refilling (“tapping”) sites
  • Dry ice supplies
     

The cryobank is situated on the ground floor of the main building of the BIOCEV Centre.  The cryobank is only accessible via an electronic chip. All users handling the cryobank equipment (including the tapping sites) must undergo training for work with liquid nitrogen. Only after this training they will be given a chip with pre-programmed rights. Users can come to these spaces at any time (regardless of working hours of the cryobank facility) and deposit/retrieve vials by themselves. The electronic chip has been pre-programmed individually, so that each user is permitted handling with and access to the appropriate Dewar canisters and tapping sites only.

 

The “tapping site” – where users shall be able to tap liquid nitrogen into containers designated for this liquid, again via an electronic chip. In total, three tapping sites shall be available – one directly in the cryopreservation room – R1.003 – designated for refilling non-pressure containers, another one in R1.002 – adjacent to the main cryopreservation space – designated for refilling pressure containers, and the remaining one in room M1.017, again on the ground floor of the main building – also for refilling pressure containers.

One more tapping site is located in the cryobank of building SO 002 and is intended for refilling non-pressure containers.

Work in both cryobanks of the BIOCEV Centre is regulated by the Rules for Operation.

This series is intended for storage of 750 to 6,000 2-ml cryotubes deposited in cryoboxes in a volume of 35-130 l LIN with low daily evaporation. These Dewar canisters are provided with 17 racks for cryoboxes.

The K series of Dewar canisters is designed for storage of large amounts of various samples (e.g., up to 38,350 2-ml cryotubes) in a volume of 48 – 590 l LIN.  The diameter of the neck of these Dewar canisters is identical to the inner canister diameter.  They are provided with locking wheel casters and a special hinged lid. Samples are deposited in built-in spaces.  They are automatically refilled and monitored.

The LABS series is intended for storage of large amounts of various samples (e.g., up to 78,300 2-ml cryotubes) in a volume of 407 to 1,630 l LIN. The diameter of the neck of these Dewar canisters is lower than the inner canister diameter, and their inner part contains a turning one-storey quadratic-oriented carousel. They are provided with locking wheel casters and a special hinged lid. They are automatically refilled and monitored.
