Postdoctoral researcher in SARS-CoV-2 research and protein engineering
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work with us on addressing questions related to SARS-CoV-2 evolution and to use in vitro evolution techniques for exploring viral sequence space and mutational pathways. Our ultimate goal is to predict the future mutations by combinations of affinity-restricted mutagenesis and antibody escape selections.
The project deals with predicting SARS-CoV-2 future variants by the combination of in vitro mutational trajectories mapping, and antibodies escape determination by yeast display technique and deep sequencing. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in every project step including protein production, in vitro evolution experiments, biophysical characterization of binding interactions, pseudovirus infectivity studies, and structural biology.
Your personal and lab skills development will be highly encouraged. Your independent experiments, ideas, projects, and collaborations within the scope of the lab will be most welcomed, supervised, and supported. You will also be encouraged to help other team members, mentor younger researchers, prepare publications, grant proposals and conference presentations.
We are looking for a trained Ph.D. in biochemistry, protein science, molecular biology, or similar disciplines that is fluent in spoken and written English. Passion for the topic and self-motivation are more preferred than a wide background in the field or strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Yet previous experience with protein engineering, cytometry, protein production workflow, database work (GISAID) and basic Python coding are advantageous. Willingness to travel and do internships is also needed, since international collaboration is an essential part of our research. Last but not least, proper lab practice, good social skills, personal and scientific integrity, and team spirit are essential.
A protein engineering lab is being established at the BIOCEV center under the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. The lab will be instrumented with all essential equipment needed for the project including protein production, yeast display, and tissue culture work. The BIOCEV Center is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation that will be available through its facilities.
We offer a 3 years contract with a 3-month initial appointment.
Our preferred starting date is 1.1.2023.
